New coffee roastery to Löfbergs from Kafeko & Probat

About the customer

  • Löfbergs
  • Segment: Coffee processing / roastery project
  • Project type: New greenfield roastery (complete process solution)

Background & context

Probat has supplied coffee process solutions together with Kafeko in the Nordic area for many years, ranging from small single projects to complete roasteries. One of these complete roasteries was delivered through the Kafeko/Probat collaboration and finalized for Löfbergs in 2021.

To build a complete new greenfield roastery takes time and significant effort from all parties involved. Probat has been a supplier to Löfbergs for several decades, which meant Löfbergs’ needs were well understood.

Customer challenge

The new plant was designed to match current needs, where increased volumes of whole bean production were a key driver, and to remain flexible for future market demands.

Solution

Löfbergs’ new roastery process starts with green coffee receiving that can handle:

  • Small 60–70 kg bags
  • Up to 21-ton large container bags

From receiving, the coffee is cleaned, weighed and checked before reaching the storage area containing 15 silos. From the silos, green coffee batches are weighed and sent to the roasting machine: a NEPTUNE 3000 drum roaster, equipped with state-of-the-art exhauster gas treatment for roast gases. After roasting, the coffee is sent to rest before it reaches the packaging area.

Results & outcomes

The roastery moved from planning (2018) and completed design (2019) into delivery and installation in 2020. In early summer 2021, Löfbergs processed its first coffee batches in the new plant.

Installed capacity:

  • 3 tons of green coffee per hour
  • 10,000 tons per year at full production

According to Göran Sonesson, Chief Production Officer at Löfbergs, the project went very well thanks to a long and trustful relationship between Löfbergs and Kafeko/Probat, even though Covid put the project on hold for a while.
